Practical, honest information to help you plan an accessible rail journey across the UK — from booking assistance to navigating busy stations.
Know Before You Go
A checklist to help you feel prepared before your journey.
- Book Passenger Assist at least 2 hours before travel (24 hours recommended for complex journeys)
- Check step-free access at your departure and arrival stations on the National Rail website
- Confirm lift availability — lifts can be out of service; always have a backup plan
- Ask your train operator about priority seating and wheelchair space reservations
- Find out where the accessible toilet is on your train before you board
- If you use a Changing Places facility, check availability at your station in advance
- Consider quieter travel times if sensory environments are a concern
- Download or print your tickets and any assistance booking confirmation
- Allow extra time at the station — boarding ramps and assistance can take a few minutes
- Know who to contact if something goes wrong: station staff, train manager, or the operator helpline
